Welcome to the Open Marine Initiative

The Open Marine Initiative is an undertaking by the leaders in the marine classified advertisements industry to create open, interoperable standards for boat specifications.

Put simply, the Initiative intends to set standards for trading data between its members, so that brokers only have to enter in their data once, in order to take full advantages of the services that a world of classified websites have to offer. Initiative members are also committed to sharing the data free of charge to the broker.

For more details, please look at the About the Initiative page. If you are a provider of classified marine ad services or stock management or CRMsoftware, please look at the Usage Of The OpenMarine Schema section. We can be contacted through the means listed on the Contact Us page.

Next version of Open Marine

We are currently developing the next version of the Open Marine schema to include various improvements including:

  • Indicating when photos have changed so they don’t need downloading so often.
  • Support for other rich media such as videos and virtual tours.
  • Better support for features that may have multiples.
  • Improved support for multiple languages.
  • More fields to describe boats in more detail.
  • Feed validator.
  • Improved documentation.

Richard W. Roberts, Chairman of Open Marine said:

“Since its launch in 2007, Open Marine has revolutionised data sharing of brokers’ boat information, saving brokers countless hours of duplicating data entry."

“Utilised by many boat marketplace portals and brokers all over the globe, Open Marine has become the standard, but it is long overdue for an update. There have been various new unofficial versions created by several portals in lieu of an updated official version so it’s time to incorporate those improvements plus some additional enhancements to create the new official standardised version of the schema.”

If you have any suggestions for improvement to the schema please contact us here.
